Welcome to Horse Country of North Texas!
Some people are surprised to learn that Texas is the number ONE horse state in the U.S., with over 1 million horses. Known as "North Texas Horse Country",
the state's primary breeding and ranching area stretches north from Fort Worth and continues almost to the Oklahoma state line. Until recently, this gem of
Texas landscape was unknown to most people, but growing awareness of the area's beauty, educational value and pure Western American heritage is
making a visit to Horse Country a must-do for many travelers.
Best known for the Quarter Horse, Texas Horse Country also turns out superior Thoroughbreds, Paints, Arabians, Appaloosas, Warmbloods and more.
Many disciplines are practiced here, including cutting, halter, roping, western pleasure, dressage and reining. North Texas ranchers are not attempting
to simply produce another generation of horses - they are striving to improve the breed and perfect their training techniques. They are producing the next world champions.
Attracted to the area's mild winters, professional horsemen began moving into Denton County and establishing ranches in the 1970s, settling primarily
in the north and east part of the county where the well-drained, sandy loam soil is perfect for working horses year-round. This area is now a national
equine breeding and training area with over 300 large farms and ranches. Mare care, training, equine suppliers and equine specialists abound, making
this area a mecca for professional horsemen and horse enthusiasts from all over the world.
Whether you are a horse professional, an enthusiast or just want to experience the history and heritage of the American West, consider one of the Horse
Country tours available. The Denton Convention and Visitor's Bureau offers four guided tours each year. If you prefer to go at your own pace, you'll enjoy
the self-guided driving tour.
